Sharing care responsibilities as a family
Bring more clarity to schedules, everyday tasks, and communication when several people share care.
Include the person receiving care
Begin by asking about their preferences, routines, and the support they would like. Agree on what information they are comfortable sharing with relatives. A family plan should reflect their choices as well as the availability of the people helping.
Give each task a clear owner
List practical responsibilities such as arranging appointments, organising transport, buying household supplies, and contacting the care provider. Agree on one owner and a backup for each task. Be realistic about work commitments and travel time rather than assuming everyone can always be available.
Use one shared schedule
A paper calendar or a shared digital calendar can keep visits and family commitments in one place. Record the time, the person responsible, and any arrangements that still need confirmation. Share only the personal information needed to coordinate each task.
Review the arrangement together
Set a regular time to ask what is working and which tasks need to be reassigned. Give family members room to say when they need a break. If support needs change, discuss the service arrangements with your provider and any clinical questions with the treating professional.
